about

“…an ensemble that offers snappy Latin tunes with bilingual lyrics.” -The New York Times

"What was missing was a soundtrack for bilingual/bicultural Latino kids. The four-member band has done it both musically and lyrically, mixing Mexican folk and cumbia with a rock sensibility and alternating smoothly between English and Spanish. ” – New York Daily News

“The bilingual Brooklyn quartet proves singer Sandra Velasquez’s theory that “whenever you have an accordion and a cowbell, there’s a celebration! ” – Time Out New York Kids

Moona Luna is the passionate second project of Mexican-American songwriter Sandra Velasquez and her Latin band Pistolera. Inspired by the birth of her daughter, Velasquez wrote an albums’ worth of songs geared towards families. After writing exclusively in Spanish for Pistolera, Velasquez decided to make Moona Luna’s songs bilingual so that everyone could enjoy the positive messages of joy and discovery that accompany their accordion driven melodies. Their debut album, Piñata Party (2011), won a Parent’s Choice Award as well as CD of the Year Award for a foreign language from Creative Child Magazine. The band has already performed all over the country, from festival stages to libraries. They recently performed a series of book festivals sponsored by Target.
